“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.”
— Mark 12:30

In this second module, we will study the first three Commandments of the Decalogue, which govern and guide our relationship with God.

These Commandments teach us that God must be the center and ultimate goal of our existence. They call us to love Him above all things, to worship and honor His Holy Name, and to dedicate ourselves to Him through prayer, worship, and the faithful observance of the Lord’s Day.

To love God above all else, we must turn away from every form of idolatry, including the many forms of idolatrous practices that are prevalent in the world today. Above all, we must guard against sins committed against the theological virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity, which unite us to God and direct our entire spiritual life toward Him.

The Second Commandment teaches us to honor and praise God’s Holy Name while forbidding blasphemy and every irreverent use of His Name. We are called to bear courageous witness to Our Lord Jesus Christ, even in the face of a world that rejects Him, and to remain faithful even when this witness entails suffering or persecution. This Commandment also addresses practices such as simony and false oaths, which are contrary to the reverence owed to God. It further teaches us that promises made to God must be taken seriously and faithfully fulfilled.

The Third Commandment teaches us how to honor God through acts of worship and the proper observance of sacred time. To fulfill this Commandment, we must keep the Lord’s Day holy by following the Church’s guidelines concerning worship and rest, especially the precept of attending Holy Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. This lesson also examines the other precepts of Holy Mother Church, helping us understand how they guide the faithful in living a life of obedience, worship, and sanctification.
