The Mercy Aid Fund is promoted by the Heralds of the Gospel and aims to raise funds for the charitable works of the Catholic Church throughout Brazil.

It is a work of Brazilian Catholics in the service of the Church in Brazil. It supports charitable initiatives of bishops, parish priests, and lay people who approach it with aid projects based on Christian love of neighbor and social interest, on a non-profit basis.

It serves as a fund for donations which are then administered where the voluntary and selfless charity of people consecrated to God offers concrete help to those in need.

Why the symbol of the pelican?

According to an ancient legend, when the pelican has no way to feed its young, it opens a wound in its own breast with its beak and feeds them its own flesh. Our Lord Jesus Christ, like the pelican, was wounded from head to toe for the love of mankind. By His Precious Blood we were saved from death and sin.

The pelican is therefore one of the most expressive Eucharistic symbols and is widely represented in traditional Catholic iconography. The hymn Adoro te Devote, attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas, refers to the pelican in one of its verses:

Lord Jesus, tender pelican, wash me, unclean, with your blood, of which a single drop can save the world from all sins.

Could there be a better symbol for the Mercy campaign, which seeks to raise funds for the Catholic Church's charitable works?

The Way to the Kingdom of Heaven

What does Jesus ask of us to enter the Kingdom of Heaven? He does not demand great human or material works, nor culture or great studies; nor does He ask us to accumulate wealth or many properties.

What does He ask of us? Works of mercy: to have compassion on our brothers and sisters, on the most needy, on the little ones. To feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick and those in prison, and give shelter to pilgrims.

For these are truly the brothers and sisters of Christ Jesus: “ Whatever you did for one of these least brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me ” (Mt 25:40).
