Saint Romanus, deacon (†c. 550). A Jew from Emesa, Syria, he converted, received the diaconate, and left for Constantinople. He distinguished himself as a composer of liturgical hymns, earning the name “the Melodist,” which is why iconography depicts him with a tongue in his hands.
