The Church's ancient tradition of praying for her departed children who are in purgatory received a strong impetus at the end of the 10th century through Saint Odilo, abbot of Cluny. In 1915, Pope Benedict XV extended the commemoration of the faithful departed to the universal Church and authorized all priests to celebrate three Masses that day in suffrage for their souls.
