Optional memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. Tradition relates that on the night of August 5 the Virgin Mary appeared in dreams to Pope Liberius and a Roman patrician, asking both to build a church in her honor. The following morning, despite the height of the Roman summer, the Esquiline Hill was miraculously covered with snow, indicating where the basilica should be built.
