Martin of Dume, bishop (†579). A native of Pannonia, present-day Hungary, and a man of great learning, he occupied the episcopal see of Dume and later that of Braga. Through his apostolic zeal and preaching, the Suevi abandoned the Arian heresy and embraced the Catholic faith. He worked fervently to eradicate idolatrous customs, including linguistic ones, as in the Christian naming of the days of the week, and wrote important short treatises, particularly on moral, catechetical, and pastoral guidance and monastic life. Through his virtue and wisdom, says Saint Isidore of Seville, the Church flourished in Gallaecia.
