Saint John Chrysostom, bishop and Doctor of the Church. After his mother's death, he withdrew to the desert. Summoned to Antioch, he was ordained deacon and priest and later appointed bishop and patriarch of the See of Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Empire. For the fire and wisdom of his words, he was called Chrysostom, a Greek word meaning “golden mouth.” He died in exile in 407, leaving an abundant body of intellectual works.
