In Portugal, memorial of the holy Guardian Angel of Portugal, whose veneration was traditional from ancient times; it was officially established by Pope Leo X in 1504, and began to be celebrated with the greatest solemnity in all Portuguese cities and towns. However, it became popular through the spreading of the account of the Angel of Portugal's three apparitions to the three shepherd children in Fátima, and Pope Pius XII approved this memorial's inclusion in the Portuguese liturgical calendar.
