Saint Fabian (or Fabianus), pope and martyr (†250). According to the historian Eusebius, he was elected by divine inspiration while still a simple layman. A dove is said to have landed miraculously on his head during the assembly gathered to elect the successor of Pope Anterus. He was a victim of the persecution of Decius.
