Saint Elijah the Tishbite, prophet (†c. 9th century B.C.). A prophet of the Lord during Ahab's reign. One of the greatest of the Old Testament, he fought corruption and idolatry through mighty miracles. He rebuked the chosen people for their idolatry and challenged the priests of Baal in the name of the one true God. He was taken up in a chariot of fire.
