Saint Anthony, abbot (†356). Great patriarch and master of monastic life. Wishing to “be perfect as the Heavenly Father is perfect,” he began his life as an anchorite at twenty, near his native village, from which he moved successively to increasingly secluded places in the desert. He became famous as a great victor in the continual struggle against the devil. He died in 356 at 105 years of age.
