Saint Thomas Becket, bishop and martyr (†1170). Appointed archbishop of Canterbury by King Henry II of England, he proved a great defender of the Church's rights and a tireless guardian of souls. He was martyred in his own cathedral for refusing to accept the king's new Constitutions.
