Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, priest (†1556). A member of the Basque nobility, he was a career soldier. Severely wounded in a battle, he converted during his convalescence. After a period of recollection and study, he gathered a group of young men to undertake apostolic activities and later founded with them the Society of Jesus, of the Jesuit Fathers, to defend the faith as soldiers Ad maiorem Dei gloriam, “For the greater glory of God.”
