Memorial of Saint Benedict, abbot (†547). Founder of the Benedictine Order, he is considered the father of an entire historical era: the Middle Ages. Through the Benedictines, the barbarian peoples were evangelized, giving rise to the refined Christian civilization of Europe; he is therefore considered the patriarch of monastic life in the West and the patron saint of Europe. His motto was: Ora et labora.
