Memorial of Saint Ambrose, bishop and Doctor of the Church. Born in Trier, Germany, in 340. He studied law and rhetoric in Rome and was later appointed governor of northern Italy. When the bishop of Milan died, although he was only a catechumen, the people themselves proclaimed him bishop. He was one of Providence's principal instruments in the conversion of Saint Augustine.
