Saint Aloysius Gonzaga (†1591). A Jesuit religious. Heir to the marquis of Castiglione, at the age of 10 he decided to consecrate himself to God and took a vow of chastity. Praying to Our Lady of Good Counsel, he felt called to become a Jesuit. He renounced the marquisate in favor of his brother and entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus, with Saint Robert Bellarmine as his spiritual director. He was already dreaming of missions and martyrdom when a terrible plague broke out in Rome in 1591. The Jesuits opened a hospital to aid the unfortunate victims. While caring for the sick, Saint Aloysius became infected and died shortly afterward.
