Module presentation 2 - Angelic Adventure!

St. Matthew, in his Gospel, tells us a very beautiful story. The Apostles were out on a boat on the Sea of Galilee when strong winds made the boat rock dangerously. Jesus walked out to them on the water. St. Peter, seeing Our Lord walking on the water, asked Him: “Lord, if it is You, tell me to come to You on the water!” Jesus asked Him to come.

Peter didn’t think twice. His gaze was fixed on Jesus and he jumped into the water and starting walking towards Our Lord. Suddenly, a heavy wind made the waves rise up! He felt the grip of fear and doubted. He started sinking and cried out: “Lord, save me!” He had trusted in Jesus and obeyed Him. Jesus would not abandon him, though his faith was not perfect. Christ grabbed him by the hand and saved him.

Now, when the angels were created by God in heaven, something similar happened. God created them perfect in their nature. But, He asked them to trust in Him and to plunge into the deep. To jump into the waters of grace! To launch out on a spiritual adventure, that went beyond their angelic nature. He would lead them by hand, but they had to accept His invitation. This was the calling that the angels received from God to become part of His family: to become children of God by grace; to spend all eternity with God.

But, a cry of revolt shook the peace of heaven: “I will not serve!” This blasphemous cry, that echoes on earth till today, was Lucifer’s response to God’s invitation. And he dragged a third part of the angels with him in his rebellion.

Another cry resounded across the heavens: “Who is like God?” was the war-cry of the great war that was declared in heaven by St. Michael and the Holy Angels against Lucifer and the demons. The Holy Angels defended God’s honor and exorcized the heavens of the presence of the demons.

The demons were condemned to eternal damnation. But, the Book of Revelation that narrates this first and greatest war tells us that they were thrown down to earth!

Yes, the demons continue the war on earth. And all of us, whether we are aware of it or not, are enlisting on either side of the battle-field. This war involves all of us: for God, or against God!

In this second module of our course, called the “Angelic Adventure”, I’ll be your tour-guide on an investigation into this spiritual adventure. What really happened? How did angels become demons? What about the good Angels? What do they do in heaven? What is their life like in heaven? We’ll talk about the supernatural vocation of the angels in this module of our series on the Angels.
