Saint Francis of Assisi (†1226). The son of a wealthy merchant from Assisi, in his youth he took part in the wars then ravaging Italian cities; it was during this time that he heard the voice of Our Crucified Lord three times, calling upon him to support His Church, which was falling into ruin. He founded the Order of Friars Minor and, together with Saint Clare, the Order of Poor Clares.
