Memorial of Saint Jerome. Priest and Doctor of the Church (†420). After a wayward youth, he was baptized in 366, abandoned pagan culture, and led an ascetic life in a desert near Antioch. Ordained a priest at the age of 38, he participated in the Roman Council of 382 and became secretary to Pope Saint Damasus, who commissioned him to revise the Latin translations of the Bible—a task that culminated in the translation known worldwide as the Vulgate. He vigorously combated the errors of his time. Like his contemporary Saint Ambrose, he also distinguished himself in the defense of virginity.
